In May 2022, theatre groups Teatr 21 and Blue Apple Theatre came to Brno. We spent six days doing theatre activities, getting to know each other, and making friends with Aldente Theatre and a group of young researchers from Rytmus. We had seven workshops and seven theatre shows for everyone to enjoy! Workshops We all speak different languages, but in theatre, we can understand each other. In the workshops, we did fun things like trying out special musical instruments and using them to talk to each other. We also explored how we move in different ways depending on where we’re from. We even did a play in three different languages! We also visited different theatres in Brno, and we took a special picture at the National Theatre to show that theatre brings us all together. It is also a gentle reminder that actors with disabilities are not (yet) very common in national theatres… Festival The five day Brno Festival featured seven performances and a programme of enrichment activities. These included a workshop for the audience, led by student researchers, focused on the Czech production Who am I? and the Polish production of Trolls. There was also a panel discussion with the leaders and actors of the troupe after the English production of The Wizard of Oz. Throughout these events, Socratic questioning was a key part of the experience, providing us with much enjoyment and thought. We weren’t alone in this – young theatre critics were also deeply pondering, guided by our researchers Hana and Anna. Together, they discussed the challenges and possibilities of writing reviews for actor-specific performances. The outcome of this discussion is an article by Eliška Raiterová titled Critic-specific? The Brno festival Be IN! (clusive) and how to write about it. The festival was on TV, and you can watch it here.
